Disability Action Week 2024

Each year Disability Action Week acknowledges the important and vital roles that people with a disability play in our community. It’s a time to celebrate achievements and the outlets that support diverse connection and access needs. Disability Action Week is on 24 November to 1 December 2024. This year’s theme is ‘Accessible communication: connect, include and empower’.

Communication isn’t one-size-fits-all and should be adaptable to diverse community needs. Accessible communication ensures that everyone, regardless of their abilities or preferences, can easily access and understand information. Even small changes can remove barriers and empower individuals to achieve their goals. 

The Sunshine Coast is one of the most valued areas in the country and as we grow as a community we want to ensure it is accessible for all. We recognise that people have different abilities, and for some, everyday services that many of us take for granted can present significant challenges. To reduce this isolation, the Sunshine Coast Council has a Community Strategy Action Plan and an All Abilities Action Plan designed to foster an inclusive, connected and empowered Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Libraries offers a large range of resources that can be accessed by everyone. All locations have wheelchair ramps or lifts and the Technology Collection includes vision impaired keyboards. There are several collections that assist with all abilities such as the eLibrary, Audio Books, Large Type, Home Library Service, Literacy Services and Technology Help. Even library events hold a wealth of information for the community and are open for age-appropriate bookings (children’s and adulting programming).
