Internet use guidelines
Guidelines governing acceptable use of internet access provided in public libraries
- By using the Libraries internet service, users discharge Sunshine Coast Council from any liability that might arise from the use of the service including liability in relation to defamation, and offensive material or any breach of copyright that may occur as a result.
- The library is not responsible for restricting available content or supervising internet use.
- Downloading and/or accessing of illegal information from the internet may lead to prosecution.
- Users must not download or run software from the internet on library computers.
- Sunshine Coast Libraries maintains up-to-date virus protection, however, corruption can still occur.
- Internet services are not secure, therefore it is the user’s responsibility to ensure they are browsing securely. Users should be careful when submitting personal details or other information that has the potential to be misused.
- Sunshine Coast Council employs a third party provider to limit possible access to materials or information that users may find offensive, controversial or inappropriate.
- Libraries cannot guarantee the quality or suitability of information on the Internet.
- Parents or guardians, are responsible for the internet information selected and/or accessed by their children.

- Sunshine Coast Libraries, through its desktop browser software, caching proxy servers and firewalls, may record and archive internet activity for a period of not less than thirty days and in some cases may maintain records and archives of internet activity for periods not exceeding fifty-three weeks.
- Library staff have the authority to immediately end an internet session if offensive or inappropriate material is displayed in public view. Library privileges may be suspended for unacceptable internet use.
