New chapter for Caloundra Library
Council endorses new three-level Caloundra District Library
The City of Beaches has a new green-star rated, district level library in its sights after Sunshine Coast Council endorsed the progression of detailed design at its Ordinary Meeting on 25 March 2021. The detailed design is currently underway.
The approved preliminary design pays homage to the building’s butterfly roofline, beautiful soaring ceilings and responds to its locational advantages, in particular the neighbouring green space of Bill Venardos Park.
The three-level building will also include a customer service centre, community meeting spaces and a small Council administration office. The library will provide a typically Queensland indoor/outdoor experience with spaces for all ages and users.
It will include:
- Level 1, 1788m2 – Library, dedicated children’s areas, customer service, kiosk, amenities, covered outdoor room and deck, foyer and event space.
- Level 2, 1622m2 – Library, library work areas, collections, quiet spaces, amenities, outdoor activity space, maker space, podcast recording room and meeting room.
- Level 3, 1806m2 – Administration including councillor offices, library, amenities and a variety of bookable community meeting rooms.
The library will be the first new library for the Sunshine Coast Local Government area in more than 20 years. It is estimated that the Caloundra District Library will service a population of at least 102,000 people by 2031, until the proposed construction of a new library at Caloundra South.
The proposed District Library is part of the Caloundra Centre Activation project vision which aligns with the Caloundra Centre Master Plan, presented to the community and endorsed by council in 2017.
The new contemporary district library in the heart of the Caloundra Community and Creative Hub will create an integrated space connecting The Events Centre, a new Caloundra Regional Gallery, and the new Town Square, through to Bulcock Beach.
The library will draw you off the street into an outdoor, covered extension to the building and as you step into the foyer a wonderful void opens up connecting the first and second levels of the library. It will offer a place for all our residents, and especially our young families and seniors, to keep abreast of new technologies and innovations.
