#oddlysatisfying

"Oddly satisfying" is a category of online video clips that show repetitive events or actions that viewers find satisfying. Like meditation it brings a pleasing sense of balance and order to those who watch them. The trend emerged in 2010 on Reddit and has since become commonplace on platforms like YouTube and Instagram. A quick search of #oddlysatisfying on Instagram reveals 2.4 million posts and #satisfyingvideos has 3 million posts. There are videos of people writing calligraphy in fluid and perfect swoops, pretty paint colours being smoothly mixed together, things fitting perfectly into place, objects being crushed by hydraulic press, hot knives slicing through plastic toys like butter, frosting being pipetted onto a cake, bars of soap being shaved into thin slices; the list goes on and on.

The reasons why people are drawn to watch these videos widely debated, but the common agreement is that the human minds preference for symmetry, patterns and repetition is the reason why we get that satisfied feeling. The effect of watching such videos has been described as a "brain massage" or "lightly hypnotizing", and has shown to help overcome stress or anxiety.

An essential part of oddly satisfying videos is the Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR). ASMR, while often used to describe YouTube videos featuring people softly whispering into a microphone or tapping their nails on a surface making it feel like they are tapping right onto your brain, is actually the sensory response that occurs in some people in when watching these videos.

So, in essence, you get pleasure from oddly satisfying videos as if we were actually cutting soap or squishing slime ourselves.

Oddly satisfying at home

Interested in trying out this trend at home? There are many mediums to choose from but slime is definitely one of the most popular materials used in the content online.

How to make clear slime

  • 1/2 cup washable PVA clear glue
  • 1/2 cup water to mix with glue and 1/2 cup of warm water to mix with the borax powder
  • 1/4 tsp borax powder (laundry aisle)
  • Measuring cups, bowl, spoon or craft sticks
  1. Measure out 1 cup of clear glue into a bowl, then add 1 cup of water to the glue. Stir to combine.
  2. Measure out 1/2 teaspoon of borax powder and 1 cup of hot water. Hot tap water is fine and does not need to be boiled.
  3. Add the borax powder to the water and stir well to combine. This is your slime activator. Stir until the powder is well combined.
  4. Add the borax slime activator solution (borax powder and water) to the glue/water mixture. Start stirring! Your slime will begin to form instantly. Keep stirring until your slime has formed and remove immediately to a dry container.
  5. Continue to knead slime with your hands for several minutes to improve the consistency of the slime.

More: Add things like glitter, confetti, and food colouring to make your slime more exciting.

How to make fluffy slime

  • 1/2 cup of white washable PVA School Glue
  • 3 cups of foaming shaving cream
  • 1/4-1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
  • Food colouring
  • 1 tablespoon of saline solution (contains both sodium borate and boric acid as ingredients)
  • Bowl, spoon, measuring cups and spoons
  1. Measure 3-4 heaping cups of shaving cream into a bowl.
  2. Add colour!
  3. Next, add a 1/2 cup of glue to the shaving cream and mix.
  4. Add 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda and mix.
  5. Add 1 tablespoon of the saline solution to the mixture and start whipping!
  6. Once you get the mixture thoroughly whipped and combined, you can pull it out with your hands!

Note: Wash hands thoroughly after playing with slime. People with sensitive skin should use caution when selecting a slime recipe. Using disposable gloves when mixing slime is recommended. If you already are sensitive to laundry soaps or borax, these slime recipes may cause irritation.
