Strawberry heaven

The love of fresh strawberries is universal and strawberry farms abound on the Sunshine Coast. With strawberry season in full swing, now is the time to enjoy these scrumptious delights. Fun fact! Technically the strawberry is not a berry, but a member of the rose family.

Are you curious for more weird facts? So are the Belgians – they have a whole museum dedicated to the strawberry. Who knew!

They are easy to grow, great to cook in everything from jams, desserts, smoothies, to bliss ball, cakes and tarts. Strawberries are a great source of Vitamin C and Manganese in addition to being a great source of antioxidants among other health benefits.

If you want a lovely day out, there are plenty of pick your own strawberry experiences right here on the Sunshine Coast:

This year the regular Chevallum State School Strawberry Festival has been transformed into an online event on 19 September 2020: The Great Strawberry Bonanza.

Want to give growing your own strawberries a go? They are great in containers or hanging baskets which are easily relocated to avoid fruit sunburn. To grow them in the ground you will need a raised bed and soil with a good amount of compost, somewhat acidic and topped with a good mulch. Whether you choose seedlings or runners to start your crop, once your plants start producing it is important to make sure you do not get water on the fruits and leaves. Even though strawberry plants need to be moist, they are susceptible to mould and fungus problems.

One great tip for keeping pests away from your precious plants is to 'companion plant' with garlic and onions, both have strong scents that repel pests. It is best practice to replace your strawberry plants every 2-3 years. They will produce less and less fruit each year, so avoid disappointment with a little pre-planning. Now is the time, get out there – get the kids involved and plant some strawberries this weekend.
