Want to Hygge this winter? Indulge in some Scandinavian lifestyle trends

Scandinavia, better known as Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland – has been the source of some foreign sounding lifestyle trends over the past few years; hygge, lagom, fika, sisu, lykke. What are they and why are they so fascinating?

These intriguing lifestyle trends come from countries that rank high for both happiness and health. These are key elements for people seeking to improve their well-being. The trends also involve a few favourite past-times such as eating, socialising, décor and self-improvement! What is not to love?

A brief translation of these popular Scandinavian trends:

  • Hygge – pronounced hyoo-gah, a quality of cosiness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).
  • Lagom – pronounced la-gum, is a Swedish word with no direct English equivalent, meaning "just the right amount". Lagom is also widely translated as "in moderation", "in balance", "optimal" and "suitable".
  • Fika – a noun and adjective at the same time, pronounced feekah. Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture. Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day. It means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat.
  • Sisu – is a Finnish concept described as stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness and is held by Finns themselves to express their national character. It is generally considered not to have a literal equivalent in English.
  • Lykke - pronounced loo-kah, is the Danish word for happiness
